During a press conference just moments ago, Jay-Z announced the "Answer the Call" charity concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on September 11. Eight years ago the same day he released his first Blueprint album which was also the tragic day the many lives lost in the Twin Tower buildings.

Jay-Z is using the tragic day and turning it positive by holding the charity concert and all of the proceeds going to New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund.

Talks of as many as 10 other major artist will be performing

Tickets will go on sale September 8, for $50.

Juelz Santana Issues Statement On Arrest

Laron James aka Juelz Santana of The Diplomats and founder of Skull Gang was arrested earlier this morning from which seemed like domestic violence disturbance. His rep, Lynn Hobson had this to say.

Lynn Hobson, Juelz' rep sent this statement:

"Police were called to Juelz Santana's Home in Teaneck, New Jersey at 10am after an argument between him and his son's mother. LaRon James p/k/a Juelz Santana was then arrested and after review of the incident, police quickly released him. Santana is now back at his home." Lynn also claims that Juelz' son was no where near the argument.

(Note: I understand that if neighbors hear an argument between a man and a woman outside their fancy gated community condo, they have the right to call in the disturbance. I also know that if police pull up and see that argument, they have to treat it like a domestic incident (with both the man and the woman being questioned). But it seems like the way it was originally presented on certain sites and then just changed along the way, was irresponsible.

Man Arrested for Death Threats Against Jay-Z and Beyonce

The Detroit man accused of sending death threats to rapper Jay-Z and wife Beyonce has been arrested and charged by police. The charged man's name is Leon Desmond Barrett and reportedly sent the couple more than a dozen letters from December 2006 to April 2009. He was also charged for sending death threats to football star and sports commentator Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. One letter dated August 18th, 2007 read"I'm getting ready to start killing some more people. Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jerome Bettis and Tune-up Man are the first four people I'm getting ready to kill". Even though the 37 year old still denies the allegations he has been charged for threatening communication. There is no word on Barrett's reason for the threats and no one else involved has spoken out about the incidents.

Former Xscape singer Tameka "Tiny" Cottle and Lil' Wayne's ex-wife Antonia "Toya" Carter are set to star in a new BET reality series, the network announced this week. The show is based around the two women defining their purpose and building a brighter future for themselves as well as strive "to find inner-strength, peace and purpose" . Based in Atlanta, the new show follows the lives of the two women, who in addition to co-parenting two of Hip-Hop's biggest stars, also happen to be best friends. Both women are also seeking to be defined outside of the shadow of the men in their lives. The first Tiny and Toya 30-minute episode will debut at 10pm on June 30.

“I'm not really mad but it's kinda like I'm fed up,” Bow Wow proclaims. Bow Wow's Twitter posts addressing hopes of being dropped from Columbia Records left many confused. He now has made his unhappiness at Columbia very clear via his live video chat.
“I think Columbia's problem is that they don't know how to work with rappers. I'm being totally honest,” states Bow Wow as he continues to speak of how Columbia works “extremely well” with labelmates John Legend and Beyonce. Although he claims to be unhappy with his label and has been for the past five years, the rapper makes it clear that he is appreciative of Columbia and that he is not mad, but simply just “fed up.” Bow Wow also reveals that he is soon to headline his ninth arena tour.

It was only a matter of time before the Guitar Hero phenomenon went Hip Hop. Activision is publishing a new music video game named DJ HERO. With gameplay similar the Guitar Hero, DJ HERO’s imput methods include a turntable controller, guitar controller, and a microphone. Players will feel like real DJs mixing tracks, and have a chance to mix rock and hip hop with the DJ vs. Guitar mode. Over 1000 and mixes have been licensed by Activison including Jay-z’s “Dirt off your shoulder” and “Hip Hop” by Dead Prez. The game will be released October 27th 2009 on PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. This is definitely a game all hip hop heads should save room for one more in your collection.

High heels started as just a simple black shoe available to women in the business field.They were designed by Andre Perugia, who began designing shoes in 1906. As time progressed, high heels began being known as a trendy accessory to increase the look of an outfit. Heels and stilettos now have platform styles, pump looks, and wedge effects.The styles of high heels in today's time are saw in several different colors, fatuous designs, and heights that may be unheard of. Designers like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Giuseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin, Sergio Rossi, and Chole, have all stepped outside of the box when it comes to their designs. Shawn Carter says that the people have spoken and wanted the death of Autotune, the vocoder software made by Antares Audio Technologies recently made popular by T-Pain. Jigga claims to have put the soundtrack to the feelings of the people, and not just aimlessly launched an attack against the sound. All this comes after the release of his newest track D.O.A. Death of Autotune. Jay-z is now an independent artist after leaving Def Jam and striking a deal with Live Nation to launch his new Roc Nation label. He paid Def Jam 5.4 million dollars for the rights to The Blueprint 3, which he owed Def Jam as the last album of his contract.

The Blueprint 3 will drop September 11, 2009, a historic date. For those that remember that’s same day The Blueprint dropped back in 2001. Rest In Peace to all those lost in the tragedy of 9/11/01. Jay-Z gives Kanye a pass to use Autotune and says it’s because he doesn't use it as a crutch. Jigga says the concept came about after Kanye stated the track (D.O.A. produced by Kanye West and his mentor No I.D.) went against everything Jay-Z would have to go against everything on the track. Kanye said no autotune or anything. Jay-Z says his hair is him not conforming also, and that he generally doesn't cut his hair during the album making process. And also the girls like it. Mr. Carter will throw a show for The Blueprint 3's promotion and donate the proceeds to charity. When asked about the current state of hip hop he didn’t say much. However, Jay-Z likes Soulja Boy Tellem!

Shawn Carter goes on to say “He makes records that are fun!” Also “He's 17-18 years old, he can't talk about selling drugs.”Though Jigga did say that he can't listen to a Soulja Boy album, he does however like Turn My Swag On. Jay says "I can sing that record." He also likes Drake, and thinks that youngsters like Drake show that the game will be ok in the future. Specifically he likes, Successful from Drake’s So Far Gone mixtape, he says there’s honesty in the record. Jay says about the line “I know success is coming I just hope that I alive for it. That’s clever.” We now await more music from the icon Jay-Z and we are anxious as children on Christmas Eve for September to get our hands on The Blueprint 3!

Kid Famous: 365 Days Later

From January 2008 to January 2009 Toronto’s represented rapper The Kid Famous has kept everything he’s recorded to make, 365 Days Later. “I Don’t ghostwrite for Jay-Z, although I could, says upcoming rapper Kid Famous, out of Toronto. A compilation of freestyles, dubs, exclusives and features, Kid Famous puts on for his city on 55 tracks. 365 Days Later is a combination of everything he’s recorded from January 2008 to January 2009. His mother even appears on the mixtape, sound familiar? Stayed tuned to CultureShockMag for that. What sounds like Peedi Crakk & Beanie Sigel make an appearance as well (straight comedy). He comes in with a bang on, I’m the Shit, “I’m the shit and fly on top of it.” He brings back the gift of freestyle as well as his single, Ain’t No Use that talks about the stereotypes of rappers. A mix of originality, a punch of skill and bang of drive and great promo is quite obvious. It’s right to say, Kid Famous is destined for fame check out why.

As always, Weezy F. Baby is cranking out only the best songs for everybody. This mixtape shows the fans JUST how far he has come as an artist. The diversification of the different genres on this mixtape makes it an enjoyment for everyone. “Every Girl” and “ I Got That” are tracks that'll have the ladies wanting Weezy F. Baby, while street bangers such as “ I’m So Official” and “ Don’t Go Uptown”, will have license plates rattling all year long. Wayne also steps out of his comfort zone with, “Renaissance Rap”, which displays Wayne flowing to an A Tribe Called Quest-influenced beat. On the slowed down, R&B track “My Girl”, closer to the end of the mixtape, Wayne takes his shot at singing without autotune, and it wasn’t a bad shot at all. It takes a minute to get used to him singing, but eventually, fans will want to keep the song on repeat. He even manages to hit Prince-type high notes! Good job, Weezy, we can definitely see why you're THE New Orleans Nightmare! 4 Out Of 5

When one thinks of “Cool,” a fly mixtape to go along with the thought would be Eighty81.com’s newest mixtape, “Cool Guys Always Finish First.” Hosted by DJ Don Cannon, it celebrates the cool guys that you always looked up to as a kid. Young Chris, Curren$y, and Ohio’s own Al Fatz and Ray Cash drop off exclusives for the listeners. The flow of the mixtape is obvious a smooth ride through the Midwest to Philly to New Orleans. New talents such as Monkey Wrench and Theo give a new wave to the word Cool music. The opening, Dumb Down, by Fly Union starts the mixtape off with a bang, while, Ray Cash plays with the auto-tune a bit on Midwest Swang.

Ryan Leslie: Self Titled

By now, every music producer has turned into an artist. Timbaland, Ron Browz, Swizz Beatz, and the list can go on and on. However, one of the geniuses of the game finally dropped their first full fledged album. 30 year old, Harlem born, Anthony Ryan Leslie, a.k.a. Ryan Leslie released his self titled debut album Ryan Leslie. Many Hip Hop and R&B crooners have been waiting a long time for this highly anticipated album. Since 2000 Leslie has been producing some of the hottest songs to date, like “I Luv U” by Cheri Dennis. But, his own album showed an even more obnoxious side to his creativity. The album has the classic Soul and R&B feel with each track leading to an incredible story of a man’s pursuit of a young lady, but the lyrical approach is what sets this album apart from any of today’s big boys. Tracks like “I.R.I.N.A.” and “Quicksand” swiftly show how Leslie’s musical and lyrical talent makes him the epitome of brilliance. The entire album is produced by Ryan Leslie and the Next Selection crew. Leslie features of course long time friends Cassie and Fabolous on the track “Addiction”. Overall, the Ryan Leslie album should easily be atop this year’s best.

With much talk about the new trend of wearing Harem pants, one remembers the late trend of the 80s fashion. Harem pants are a new trend that celebrities have been spotted wearing this summer. Most are a very light cotton fabric that is incredibly suitable for summer and come in a variety of colorful shades. The Harem pants may be compared to the late great rapper, MC Hammer. Harem pants were a big trend that the California native sported back in his career as an entertainer. Daring individuals would most likely be seen wearing these comfortable, affordable pants. However, many are still waiting for the trend to spread.Another fashionable trend that may be recognized from the past is the oversized Dolman-sleeve tops for women. Many stores have been open to the new fashion of this trendy piece. The tops come in different colors, lengths, as well as designs. The tops are known to be a 2009 version of the late "Missy Elliot Trash Bag" trend. Missy Elliot changed the face of fashion when she appeared in the Supa Dupa Fly video back in 1997. This trend has returned in a very fashion forward way and is expected to stick around for a while.

Just when you thought Louis Vuitton put a hault on traffic with the Stephen Sprouse bags, another mouth dropping edition is now open to customers. Louis Vuitton has been allowing customers to personalize items as small as wallets for a while. However, to turn up the heat for the summer, the designer is now allowing you to put your own twist to the Speedy 30 or Keepall Bandoulière 55 bags. You will now be able to add your initials to the signatures by placing an order, as well as choose from 114 different colors and your choice of a stripe to add originality to your signature. Now one may think, "won't this paint fade being in the sunlight?" The answer is NO! The monogram service adds a special coat to the canvas of the bag AFTER the initials have been placed on it. For now, the monograms can only be done in selected boutiques and will not be available on the designers website. The wait time varies from 6-8 weeks as well. The fashionable bags bump up from about $700.00 to about $1,000.00 once the initials have been added to the Speedy. Let's see which celebs break these pricy bags out first.

Fans in Canada maybe infuriated with Queens Bridge native Nas. It appears that God’s Son did not show for a scheduled performance. Nas spoke about the issue; apparently the business end of thing was not properly handled. Nas stated that the show’s promoters did not have the right amount of money. Nas says “Now I don't usually leave my crib unless all the business is handled first. But I love my fans in Canada so I said cool.” So to the Canadians that love Nasir Jones the rapper isn’t to blame.

We’ve all been wondering how Remy Martin has been doing since the late conviction of being charged 2-counts of assault and facing nearly eight years of jail time. “The NY queen” knows the fans have been missing her and recently released a phone recording of her doing a couple of bars on her jail time. She also proclaimed that she will be putting out an album soon entitled, Punisher. Microsoft announced "Project Natal," a hands-free motion-sensitive controller system that could potentially challenge Nintendo’s Wii. Announced during Microsoft's annual E3 press conference, Project Natal seems to be geared toward allowing users to control games, movies, and anything else on their Xbox system with their hands alone, and without touching any hardware.

Louis Vuitton has been allowing customers to personalize items as small as wallets for a while. However, to turn up the heat for the summer, the designer is now allowing you to put your own twist to the Speedy 30 or Keepall Bandoulière 55 bags. You will now be able to add your initials to the signatures by placing an order, as well as choose from 114 different colors and your choice of a stripe to add originality to your signature. Now one may think, "won't this paint fade being in the sunlight?" The answer is NO! The monogram service adds a special coat to the canvas of the bag AFTER the initials have been placed on it. For now, the monograms can only be done in selected boutiques and will not be available on the designers website. The wait time varies from 6-8 weeks as well. Nas Requests: No Spousal Support From Kelis

Who knew one of hip hop’s hottest couples would call it quits so soon? Queens’-bred lyricist Nas has filed a response for Kelis's request for divorce and has asked the court to deny the singer any sort of spousal support. The claim was filed in Los Angeles court on Wednesday. Kelis filed for divorce last month, claiming irreconcilable differences. To make matters worse, she’s pregnant with the couple’s first child. Kelis is due in July. Both parents want joint custody of the unborn child. Nas and Kelis tied the knot in 2003, but didn't go public until 2005, according to People magazine.

Madea has done it again! The one and only Mable Simmons has gotten in trouble with the law again but this time the court will not be so nice. In Tyler Perry’s film rendition of his play Madea Goes To Jail, Perry brings that same since of drama and laughter that we all know and love. In the more serious side of the movie, Josh Hardaway [Derek Luke] is a highly respected lawyer who is soon to be married. As his life seems to be going along smoothly, an old friend name Candace “Candy” [Keisha Knight Pulliam] whom Hardaway shares a dark history with has ran into a little trouble which Hardaway can’t seem to get his mind away from. While Josh is being torn between his past and his future, Mable “Madea” Simmons is trying to keep her head on straight so she won’t end up behind bars. But we all know that is easier said than done when it comes to Madea. With so much love and laughter, this movie is sure to keep you entertained. Contrary to what critics think, Hip Hop does carry a message. In fact our culture has a history of being rooted in politics. In the early stages of rap, artists such as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five used the music as a gateway of expression of not only our joys and highs, but our lows and struggles. Keep in mind, that even though they caused a lot of controversy, N.W.A’s social commentary on realities of the streets caused people to wake up and pay attention. And if one thing Hip Hop can do-better than any other genre- is make people listen. Not to mention the social awareness groups such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, the revolutionary mentality of Tupac, and the political movements of Public Enemy, Hip Hop has been known to be used as a vehicle for change. But that was years ago. Where do the roads of politics and Hip Hop meet? And with the biggest election of our nation’s history steadily approaching, who will stand up for our culture, for our own movement? Yes, we are popularly known for our run-ins with the law, the Hip Hop Police, and dislike for “poliTRICKians” but ultimately, what happens in our communities is a result of what happens in our country. And whether we like it or not, we must be involved.
And luckily now, our generation seems to be undergoing a political revival with Democratic candidate Barack Obama vying for the presidency and events such as the case of Sean Bell, Hurricane Katrina and other incidents that have forced our culture to step up and take notice about what is happening in our communities. Since Kayne West’s statement on national tv: “Bush doesn’t care about black people”, things haven’t been the same. The Game, Cassidy, Maino, Talib Kweli, and Ice Cube have all contributed to songs based around the April 25, 2008 acquittal of the three NYPD officers involved with the Sean Bell Case. Rappers are rallying behind politics more now than ever. It’s evident when Jay-Z calls himself “The Hood’s Barack”, Jeezy name drops Hilary Clinton, and Big Boi’s most recent collabo with Mary J. Blige.
True enough, Hip Hop is often used as a scapegoat for the bulk of our problems within the urban community. "I can admit that there are some problems in hip-hop," Rapper David Banner states, "But it is only a reflection of what is taking place in our society. Hip-hop is sick because America is sick."
If you need a reason to become in politics, that should be reason enough. And if not, think about censorship of our lyrics, the recession, police brutality, the fact that there are more black men in jail then in high school, and you will see Hip Hop has more than enough issues to address.

Sending the internet on fire is Young Money’s affiliate, Drake with his latest mixtape offering, So Far Gone. Already considered a classic by most, So Far Gone not only has the web going crazy, but for those who hadn’t yet heard of the Canadian MC this mixtape will leave more than just a lasting impression. Drake, whose father played bass for Prince and uncle wrote for Al Green, serves it up not only lyrically as a rapper, but as a singer as well. Tracks such as “Houstatlantavegas”, “Brand New”, and “Night Off” allow him to play the field and not even pale in comparison to singers such as Trey Songz, Omarion, and Lloyd. On the piercing “Say What’s Real” (over Kanye’s “Say You Will” track) Drake reminds you of why he should be among the top contenders in the rap game: “24 hours from fame, yea I’m that close/Don’t ever forget the moment you began to doubt/ transitioning in from fitting in to standing out..” On the genius “Uptown” and the honest cut “Successful” featuring Bun B, Drake (also known as Drizzy) keeps your attention throughout the entire mixtape. Not only does So Far Gone go past a lot of recent efforts, is goes so far past any expectations that you might have.

‘Night life’s best kept secret’, DJ Breezye, made this mix extra SPLASHY. It is definitely a mix that belongs at the club on Friday night! The songs are all hot and dance worthy. “Dis is How We Play” by J. Money featuring Young LA, “Guns High” by Ace Hood, and “Loud” by Young Capone start off the mix nicely with an energetic feel. Young Joc, Slim, The Dream, and Ludacris are some other heavy hitters that are featured on Breezye’s well put together piece. “Kiss Me Through the Phone” by Soulja Boy and Sammie gives the mix a little subtlety with its sentimental lyrics: Girl you know I miss you; I just want to kiss you. But I can't rite now so baby Kiss me through the phone. Other songs like “Real Hard” by Young Joc and “Chain or Fit” by Bonafide automatically pulls everyone to the dance floor for an extreme boogie work out! Hands down DJ Young Breezye put his best foot forward and it shows through this mix of hot collaborations.

Young Breezye brings the heat again with Volume 2 of Just Ride. He is starting the year off right with this compilation of smooth hits. This mixtape is perfect for that long, yet fun road trip with your friends. Lil Wayne, Jamie Foxx, and Young Berg are a few of the contributors to the cruise worth mix. Breezye even adds a little taste of Memphis flavor with Yo Gotti and Kia Shine. The diva herself, and my personal favorite, Beyonce can be heard doing “Ego” one of her songs from her latest CD I AM…SASHA FIRECE. “Turning Me On” by Keri Hilson , “Rocking That Thang” by The Dream, and “Beep Beep” by Bobby Valentino have already be proven to be hits, so adding them to this mix put the cherry on top. Breeyze ends the 21 tracks with Young Capone’s “Choosin” featuring Mario, an upbeat song that blends rap and r&b. This is one of Breezye’s best because it’s versatile; play it in the house or in the car. Either way good music mean a good time.

Shut up and Listen is DJ Crisis’s one year anniversary edition that he says is “SO BIG that he had to do 2 separate Mixtapes and drop them both at the same time!” Crisis’s has brought together 48 tracks to make up two mixtapes: Hard and Soft. Shawty Lo, Gucci Mane, Ace, Plies, and Young Buck are some of the rap stars featured the Hard side of the mix. He even incorporates his own personal flavor with his freestyle over the beat from “Aint I” originally featuring T.I. “Imma G” “Me and My Goons” and “Always Strapped” are also songs that can be heard on this intense mix. DJ Crisis was on point when he named this side of the mix, because all of the songs are nothing less of being ‘Hard’ Even though Crisis has made it very clear that he knows what hardcore rap is, he also has a soft spot. Rihanna, Beyonce, Keyshia, and Ciara are the industry diva’s that can be found on the more subtle side of this mixtape. “Never Leave My Girl” by Ben One, “Make That Sound” by J Holiday, and Kristyle’s “Make You Feel” add that intimate touch that give the soft feeling to last 25 tracks. “So... as you can see...we giving ya’ll straight HEAT on this one!” says a proud DJ Crisis. Honestly, I couldn’t agree with him more, because there is definitely something for everyone to listen to.

So what’s your relationship status this Valentine’s Day? Single? Committed? Either way, DJ LissaMonet has something for everyone to groove to with her latest mixtape: LOVESTONED. “This is my baby right here. A lot of people ask me about this mixtape during the year and it’s honestly the most fun mixtape to work on” Lissamonet commented on her project. Day 26, Whitney Houston, Floerty, and Ne-yo are just a few hit artists featured on the mix. The first track is a sexy classic by Ginuwine, “So Anxious”. If you’re spending V-day with that special one, this will surely set the mood. “Come Over” by Aaliyah continues to fill the atmosphere with smooth sounds of flirtatious invitations. With songs from Maxwell, Tevin Campbell, and Chris Brown, this is sure to be the lady’s favorite. Two college-bound students hook-up at a University at Pennsylvania talent show and the rest is history! Naledge and Double-O are two of the most creative hip-hop forces that have entered the game. Both are from Chicago, hitting you with the new generation of hip-hop. But guess what…one’s the producer/DJ and the other is the lyricist…great combination, huh? Recently, the duo just signed a hot deal with Duck Down Records and by teaming up with Just Blaze, they’re sure to make hits. On their latest album, The In Crowd, Double-O produces the hottest tracks and Naledge spits the truth. With the both of these musical geniuses, some of the illest tracks are composed such as, “Dumba$% Tales” and “Move On Up”. I’m sure you’ve seen their new video dressed as car salesmen in “Driving Down the Block” (if not, then check it out on their myspace page or youtube…immediately!). “Driving Down the Block” contains an interpolation of one of Outkast’s tracks and proves their well-rounded ability to entertain your musical soul. But hold up, I’m not finished! Kidz In The Hall’s “Work to Do” track was used for Obama’s presidential campaign (NOTE: GET YOU’RE BEHINDS OUT THERE AND VOTE THIS NOVEMBER…SERIOUSLY!!!)! Undeniably, one of the most talented students that grace Tennessee State University’s campus, has to be…Weetu. Born in New Jersey, Weetu explains that she was born with an umbilical cord around her neck and the doctors immediately said that she would be brain dead. Within the arms of her mother, Weetu adorns the room with the blink of her eyes. She is then promised, “We together forever” (which inspired the name, Weetu).
This lyrical mastermind literally entered the rap game at the tender age of five, just by writing poems. By the age of ten, her art was turned into lyrics and her efforts were praised by her teachers and peers. Weetu’s poetic verses and humble personality are uniquely evident within her music. Most of her work is freestyle, besides when working on a structured project. Psalms 2:12:86 (her birthday) and the We All We Got compilation album are some of her recent creations. With the collaboration of her “right hand band”, The Truth, an inspiring and soulful sound is created to form a movement of remarkable musical talent. Think of Floetry meets The Roots and Lauryn Hill! When asked of her lyrical talent in comparison with other rappers--particularly females, Weetu says “I’m not trying to sell my body to exploit my gift”. As a “portrait of God”, she values a sense of respect and modesty when it comes to her image and music.
Unlike most of the rappers in the industry, SHE DOES NOT CURSE IN HER MUSIC! This goes along with the controversy surrounding the “N-word” within the hip-hop community. Weetu emphasizes that the words used in the artists’ music may clarify or reveal their intellectual aptitude. Aside from her rap career and college, Weetu juggles between her entertainment group, initiating a clothing line, and her charitable organization. We All We Got Foundation is a non-profit organization created to provide food, clothes, and toy for the impoverished. The Liberation Clothing Line is a project in partnership with her stylist Tyeisha Hill. Many of the proceeds from her organization go towards a mission program in Africa. With Weetu’s talent, ambition, and accomplishments (so far), I can imagine her success story ten years from now!

A few days after his first video shoot, for club anthem, Haterz Everywhere featuring Rich Boy, Atlantic Records newest artist, 18 year old B.O.B is here to claim his place. Already on one of the biggest billboards in New York City as one of LRG Clothing’s spoke models B.O.B. tells Culture Shock Mag, “Where I am now is so different from where I’d thought I’d be.”
Having a genuine love for music B.O.B. is unique in his own right. “I don’t try to stick to one genre when I make music I try to incorporate all my love for all types of music.” Influenced by Rock, Blues, DooWop and of course of Hip Hop Atlanta’s own, B.O.B takes the industry for a crazy ride. Knowing that just having a “cool” image and talent in the industry is no longer one of a kind, B.O.B. can be described as a one stop shop. First recording with group the Klinic, the beats weren’t coming fast enough. His cousin taught him the music production, Fruity Loops. B.O.B. found his new vice! He produces, writes, raps, arranges and mixes his own music.
But who exactly is B.O.B? When asked what B.O.B. means, he first explains his real name is Bob but, “I’m a random guy, just all over the place.” So it can stand for different things in different situations i.e. Beats On Blast when he goes into production mode, Ballin’ On a Budget or Books Over Bullets.
You can imagine that he sticks out like a sore thumb in the Rap world, yet is co-signed by the likes of label-mate T.I., whom he recently performed his big single with at Atlanta’s 13th Annual Birthday Bash Concert. His charismatic persona and immense energy is what attracted industry tastemaker and CEO of TJ’s DJ’s, TJ Chapman. TJ Chapman known for one of the most successful record pools and for helping launch the careers of artists like, T-Pain, Yung Joc, Rick Ross just to name a few, he truly believes B.O.B is the next superstar. After a performance at Club Crucial in Atlanta, TJ Chapman wanted to be apart in helping him achieve his dream by teaming up with manager B. Rich to become his co-manager.
He’s already released his first mix-tape Cloud 9, that he describes as classic along with Hello My Name is B.O.B. He’s also co-produced and dropped a verse on Danity Kane’s hit single “Showstopper (Remix)” featuring Pitbull, along with other features. B.O.B. is well on his way. Prepare for Take Off!

SO FAR GONE

Sending the internet on fire is Young Money’s affiliate, Drake with his latest mixtape offering, So Far Gone. Already considered a classic by most, So Far Gone not only has the web going crazy, but for those who hadn’t yet heard of the Canadian MC this mixtape will leave more than just a lasting impression. Drake, whose father played bass for Prince and uncle wrote for Al Green, serves it up not only lyrically as a rapper, but as a singer as well. Tracks such as “Houstatlantavegas”, “Brand New”, and “Night Off” allow him to play the field and not even pale in comparison to singers such as Trey Songz, Omarion, and Lloyd. On the piercing “Say What’s Real” (over Kanye’s “Say You Will” track) Drake reminds you of why he should be among the top contenders in the rap game: “24 hours from fame, yea I’m that close/Don’t ever forget the moment you began to doubt/ transitioning in from fitting in to standing out..” On the genius “Uptown” and the honest cut “Successful” featuring Bun B, Drake (also known as Drizzy) keeps your attention throughout the entire mixtape. Not only does So Far Gone go past a lot of recent efforts, is goes so far past any expectations that you might have.

FRENCH MONTANA & MAX B:

COKE WAVE

French Montana & Max B: Coke Wave

After many months of announcing “Coke Wave” was on its way, the highly anticipated mixtape/DVD combo from French Montana and Max B finally dropped last Thursday. The built up anticipation had fans snatching Coke Wave off the shelves, but reviews have been mixed.
The mixtape consists of 20 tracks, many produced by Dame Grease (of DMX-notoriety). Others were true to “mixtape” form by remixing other songs, such as All I Wanna on the Paper Planes beat and Been Around (which is hands down my favorite song on the tape) on Biggie’s Been Around the World. On NY, French and Max go head to head lyrically, and you can truly see why these rappers have such a following. French raps “I’m in the s550 with about five 50’s of that sour, tell them cowards come get me.” The guitar-looped sample on Bury Me a G (courtesy of Grease) makes for a soulful backdrop that French seamlessly laced with his clever wordplay. Other bangers to check for are the Maino-assisted God Damn, and Hold On featuring G-Unit’s Tony Yayo.
The DVD accompanying the mixtape has videos for various songs on the mixtape, as well as a few other French Montana songs not on the CD. It also includes footage of French and Max performances and day-in-the-life footage from different events.
Overall, I give the whole package a 4 out of 5. The DVD is highly entertaining, I could listen to about 80% of the songs (some were definitely skip-worthy), and it’s the Macaroni Wit the Cheese and Wavy Crocket…what’s not to love?!

Weezy F. Baby is switching up the flow between Hip-Hop and Rock n Roll with his newest mixtape. Twenty exclusive tracks make up the rap phenomenon's album-like mix. All the songs are mastered to perfection with no name drops over them! Dr. Dre, Gudda Gudda, Juelz Santana, Pharrell, and The Game are just a handful of peers Wayne has featured on his project. “Red Rum” “Every Girl” and “Hello World” go back to the basics with genuine hip-hop vibes. However, the style changes from hip-hop to grungy Rock with “Prom Queen”. Wayne’s voice over the drums and electric guitar creates a sound new to his fans, but I am sure they will be craving more. “Yes” featuring Pharrell, delivers a hardcore beat with raw lyrics from the two hip-hop beasts! Wayne even acknowledged his hometown with “New Orleans Maniac” featuring Gudda Gudda. The song comes off as a freestyle, but far from disappointing. Just like the man himself, its edgy and on point. This is absolutely a piece to the Lil Wayne collection you cannot live without.

Just a sophomore at Tennessee State University, DJ JAZZY T has earned high regards and mentoring from one of the most demanded DJs in Nashville, DJ Crisis. Many say she’s the best thing to hit Nashville. Jazzy T’s assertive and laid-back personality gains approval from a variety of audiences. Unlike most female djs, she demands the respect for her skills, rather than her sex appeal. Yes, her name is Jazzy T but it’s her hot mixes in the clubs that seduces the audiences. With DJing being known as a male dominated skill, she emphasizes that when she’s scratching, there is no difference from a male’s djing skills. In the club and campus events, she’s guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser. “You can’t be a selfish dj. You have to play what the audience wants to hear”, she says. Her ambition and love for music, is what drives her to do what she loves.
Jazzy T says she just started off just playing around but fell in love with DJing. “It was like my calling”, she says. Apparently, there’s a rule (which she acquired from her mentor, DJ Crisis) that three things will always go wrong your first time DJing: One, you’ll forget your djing equipment. Two, you’ll get nervous when the crowd isn’t feeling you. And three, No matter how much you practice, you will mess up! Jazzy T describes her first time DJing being one of her most embarrassing. “My first time DJing was during homecoming week in the courtyard (at Tennessee State). I played a popular song that everyone wanted to listen to, “Set it off”. And, you know all of the female Greeks stroll to this song! Well, I played the song and it was only like a minute long. So, everybody got mad and started asking for another DJ because the song was so short! Haha, I felt so bad!”
Well, with over a year of training, Jazzy T has improved much—you might even find her strolling to the same song that caused her to experience one of her most embarrassing moments! From DJing at the flyest parties in Nashville to the super swagged out parties in Atlanta, DJ Jazzy T has certainly earned a name for herself. With a mixtape set to debut in 2009, DJ Jazzy T is definitely on her sh*t and her fans/haters can’t wait to see what she has in store in the future!

A lot of swag, lyrical skill and a sprinkle of vulnerability, describes the self-proclaimed New Baddest Bitch in the Game, Queens native Ms. Nicki Minaj. The new face of Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money is a force to be reckoned with. After lending her vocal talents on hooks for other artists, the emcee within poured our vicious, seductive lyrics. “I always wanted to stand out [and] do what the guys were doing.” In this case it was rapping. Not only does she deal with the day to day routine of being an artist but she exclaims, “I wear the pants,” she is also President of Dirty Money Records.
Once Fendi CEO of Brooklyn label Dirty Money Records, heard songs from Nicki’s MySpace page he immediately contacted her to feature her on his The Come Up DVD series. Her video proceeded Lil’ Wayne’s, who was putting together his Young Money crew at the time. Wayne was amazed with her video and began pursuing her for the label. Nicki and Wayne linked up through Fendi and have been recording ever since.
She soon released her first mixtape, Playtime is Over, which featured the tongue lashing track, Dreams 07 paying homage to the late Notorious B.I.G’s version of Dreams by adding her twist and mentioning the rappers of today. “I wanted something with shock value and I knew that everyone’s name I mentioned would listen up extra close.” She was also featured on Lil’ Wayne’s Da Drought 3, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Freestyle that got everyone asking about her. Of course it wouldn’t have been right without being featured on television show Culture Shock with Tatiana!
Fast forward to 2008, Nicki Minaj is on her second mixtape Sucka Free: The Mixtape and probably on your boyfriends wall in a squat, reminiscent of the days of the Lil’ Kim Hardcore poster. She describes the Sucka Free and Playtime is Over as night and day. JadaKiss, Ransom and of course Lil’ Wayne are featured but Minaj gives more of a detailed look into who she is. More than likely you’ve seen her on the many Lollipop club themed parties as well. But it’s all about confidence, sex appeal and lyrical strength.
“I know my lane is probably going to be ’sex sells,’ but at the end of the day, I know I’ve got skills. And if that’s my niche, I don’t have a problem saying that’s my niche.” Playtime is Over!

Ciara, a singer that grew on us with her explosive dance moves, is coming back with her 3rd studio album entitled Fantasy Ride. Originally set to be released December 3rd, 2008, the album was pushed backed and now it’s set to be released this April. The first promo single, Go Girl, really didn’t catch the eyes of the fans but she came back with Never Ever as the official first single and got better reviews. The Song Never Ever is sampled from the 1972 hit If You Don’t Know Me By Now by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes. Successfully getting past the sophomore jinx with The Evolution album, now it’s time for Ciara to show us why she wants to stay in the industry. Mya’s fifth studio album was released in Japan December 3rd 2008 but is it ready for the US. Though the album has done extremely well in Japan, will the US accept it the same or do we expect more from Mrs. Harrison. With the failure of her last album, Liberation, being released in the US, will Mya be able to bring her name back. With a very unique voice and dance moves for days, Mya will always be remembered for songs like Moving On, My Love is Like Whoa, and my personal favorite Ridin'. Although I was disappointed with most of the songs, maybe this album will reach someone with different taste as me. Give the album a chance and review it yourself.

ARRESTED AT NBA ALLSTAR WEEKEND

Rapper Kid Cudi has been involved in an altercation that has resulted in the Cleveland native being tasered and apprehended by authorities, according to multiple sources. Details are sketchy, but the rapper apparently was involved in a fight or altercation while at the Reebok party in Phoenix, Arizona. Much of the music industry is in the city celebrating the NBA’s popular All-Star weekend. Eyewitnesses stated that Kid Cudi physically and verbally confronted a pair of Reebok employees. The artist was booked by the apparel company to perform at the venue.Sources said that Cudi wanted to wear Jordan sneakers on stage, a move that did not agree with the people of Reebok. Authorities intervened after the confrontation escalated and Cudi was tasered, a move to control his behavior. The rapper was presumed arrested by police, but actual charges have not yet been revealed.

T.I On Farewell AllStar Tour

T. I. has been reported to have been setting up a farewell tour before he goes to serve his prison sentence. He has been doing show nite after nite, for the last few months, making sure that while he’s locked up everyone will still be taken care of. So to do this, he will do a tour that will take place in the next upcoming weeks. The show will go across the U. S. and is said to be T.I.’s big going out with a bang show. Depending on the locations of the show there is said to be appearances by Keri Hilson, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Plies, Young Jezzy, and Yung LA. The shows kick off next Saturday on the 28th, find the show nearest you and get your tickets asap!

Yes its a wrap. Sean "Diddy" Combs has recently released Aundrea from her contract. Everyone watching Making the Band Reunion back in 2008, witnessed as the band was dismembered. Now its said that Dawn will be a solo act. Say good-bye Danity Kane and Hello Dawn.

Lil' Wayne the ROCKSTAR!

Lil' Wayne leading with eight Grammy nominations is now releasing yet another album. April 7th marks the day that, REBIRTH will be released. It will featured tunes with a Rock N Roll appeal. His first single, Prom Queen can be heard on 88.3FM on the Culture Shock Radio airwaves.

Lupe Lead Singer In British Rock Band

Over the weekend, news broke that rapper Lupe Fiasco was the new frontman of British rock group "Japenese Cartoon." Blogs all over the internet were saying Lupe was taking a new musical direction, but new reports have emerged to debunk these rumors.

On the Myspace page of the group, they explain the lead singer is a guy by the name of Percival Fats, and that Lupe is simply a close friend. He also finances the band, but contributes no vocals whatsoever.

The rumors stemmed from an uncanny similarity in the voices of Lupe and Percival, but Lupe insists he's only concentrating on his last album.

The Real Soulja Boy Robbery Story

It's true when they say, "Mo Money, Mo Problems," as I'm sure Soulja Boy would agree
according to the proven rumors of him and his friends getting robbed in his ATL home at
gunpoint on December 30, 2008. Apparently some armed robbers followed Soulja Boy home
after his album release party, waited for him and his crew to go in the house, kicked the door in
and robbed them.
One rumor stated that the robbers nearly had JBar, SB's friend, as a hostage
while they also stole Soulja Boy's chain and $5000. Soulja Boy stated that it was six robbers,
but the next day on December 31, 2008, a video surfaced on the internet starring two anonymous
dudes in masks and dressed in all black admitting to being the robbers and also setting the record
straight that it was not six people, but only two and confirming that they only had one gun.
Also, in the video, the two men announced there would be another video made with Soulja Boy's
chain in it. The good news is that he and his friends are ok.
Soulja Boy is worth way more $5000
so I'm positive the chain will be replaced ASAP. Culture Shock sends condolences to the whole

Lil Kim Exposes The Notorious Truth

Rapper Lil' Kim has been unshy about stating her displeasure with her portrayal in the Biggie biopic, NOTORIOUS, and now has released a statement furthering her stance. She feels she should have had a much larger role in the making of the movie, as well as in the movie itself.

"I've had enough and I'm about to expose them both… I've been quiet for a long time." "I'm very disappointed in Faith… There's nothing Faith or Ms. Wallace could do to stop me from reppin' B.I.G. all day. I'm gonna always do that… It's time for Ms. Wallace to be exposed."

No further comments were released, but it appears some will be very soon!

Rapper B.o.B's Song Featured In Nintendo Commercial
Atlanta up-and-comer B.o.B., who's putting together his debut album for T.I.'s Grand Hustle imprint, recently was chosen to have his song featured in the latest Nintendo DS commercial. DADDY'S GIRLS

We’ve watched them grow up as daddy’s little girls on Run’s House. We’ve witnessed their hard work in designing their own shoe and brand called Pastry. Now its time for daddy’s girls to move away and pursue their lives as successful business women.
Vanessa and Angela Simmons are moving to Los Angeles, giving their viewers a chance to follow them by launching their new show entitled “Daddy’s Girls”. The show will also feature their cousin Jessica and best friend Alycia. This show will prove if daddy’s girls can make their own life decisions or will they need a little help from daddy. Daddy’s Girls premiered January 5,2009 at 10:30 on MTV. Be sure to watch Daddy’s Girls to find out if Angela and Vanessa will stick to daddy’s morals and teachings or will they create their own.

January 16,2009, the life of one of Hip Hop’s greatest rappers will be portrayed on the big screen. The movie “Notorious” is a must see for all hip hop and rap fans. The movie will show the life and death of Christopher Wallace also known as Notorious BIG. The movie will allow fans to see how a Brooklyn hustler became one of the greatest rappers of all times. Actor Jamal Woolard will play the role of BIG, Angela Basset will play Voletta Wallace (Big’s mother), and Derek Luke is playing Sean “Puff Daddy” “P. Diddy” Combs. Notorious might be one of the most anticipated hip hop movies to hit box offices.

Their perfect dream wedding becomes a nightmare for both brides.

KING OF POP LONGING FOR LUNG TRANSPLANT

Longing for a lung transplant? King of Pop Michael Jackson is said to be suffering from a rare respiratory disease called Alpha 1- antitrypsindeficiency. This deficiency is said to be a fatal genetic condition if not treated. Michael already suffers from chronic gastrointestinal bleeding and emphysema. In contrary to this, Jackson’s spokesperson claims that Michael’s health and the need of a transplant is untrue. Could Michael’s rare condition be a lie to help promote his new upcoming album 7even? Seems like we will just have to wait to find out.

JIM JONES CATCHES A CASE

As a result of an altercation between rapper Jim Jones and members of R&B singer Ne-Yo's entourage on December 24 in a Manhattan Louis Vuitton store, Jones has been hit with a misdemeanor assault charge today (January 5). Earlier this morning, Jones turned himself in to the NYPD after a warrant was issued and arrangements made by attorney Scott Leemon last week. Jones court date is scheduled for February 4. He has declined any further comments at this time.

50 CENT CELEBRATES LIFE RESPONSIBLY

Violator Management, whose roster includes heavy weights such as 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes, has inked a deal with Drinks Americas to market Leyrat Cognac and Sparkling Vodka brands. 50 and Busta will become the new faces of the liquors.News of Violator's agreement with Drinks Americas comes amid agreements the company made to produce various celebrity branded drinks that include Willie Nelson, Donald Trump, Paul Newman and Dr. Dre. The liquors are scheduled to be on the market later this year.

EMINEM IS BACK

Words: Colbi A.Eminem just released a new single, Crack a Bottle on New Years. He had previously released two unfinished productions which were Relapse and Number One, produced by Dr. Dre. It seems as if Eminem is attempting to make a comeback. His last album, Encore, was released back in 2004. Hopefully he has a new project to come soon.

NEW BIGGIE BEFORE THE SOUNDTRACK

The MC, the legend; Notorious B.I.G has been getting a lot of attention recently in light of the biopic dropping January 16th. On December 26th, Mister Cee of Hot 97 delivered a late Christmas gift to New York when he dropped a few exclusive and unreleased tracks from the Brooklyn MC’s arsenal, including this demo Microphone Murderer. Mister Cee aka Calvin Laburn acted as associate executive producer on Biggie’s “Ready To Die.” Happy Holidays folks.
